Leaving Albuquerque, the road climbs into high desert mesas and ancient landscapes, passing through Grants and Gallup before reaching the fossilized wonders of Petrified Forest National Park. From there, classic Route 66 nostalgia returns in Holbrook and Winslow, followed by pine forests in Flagstaff and the birthplace of Route 66 preservation in Seligman. The journey ends in Kingman, Arizona—a key hub in the modern revival of the Mother Road.

Routing Information

Follow Historic Route 66 alignments where signed, especially through Albuquerque, Gallup, Holbrook, Winslow, Flagstaff, and Seligman; use I‑40 selectively between longer rural stretches.

Trip Tips

At higher elevations (Flagstaff especially), temperatures can be significantly cooler than surrounding desert areas—pack layers.

Fuel stops become more spread out between Gallup and Holbrook—plan accordingly.

Petrified Forest National Park includes a stretch of historic Route 66—look for roadside markers and remnants of early alignments.

Seligman is considered the birthplace of Route 66 preservation—take time to explore beyond a quick photo stop.
