From The Campground
Hannagan Campground is located in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests and is one of the highest campgrounds in Arizona at 9,100 feet. The campground offers 8 single unit sites for tent and RV camping, with trailers and motorhomes up to 16 feet allowed. There are no hookups, but potable water hydrants are available seasonally. Pets must be restrained or on a leash. The campground is close to the primitive area and wilderness, with nearby hiking trails and scenic drives. The surroundings are alpine, with high country tree species such as Colorado Blue and Engelmann spruce, subalpine and corkbark fir, and quaking aspen. Wildlife species include elk, mule deer, wild turkey, Abert squirrels, Steller jays, and northern goshawks. The understory is made up of plants such as columbine, orchids, and mushrooms. The campsite has access to an excellent network of hiking trails that wanders all through this high forest and beyond. The campsite is open from June to September and is first-come, first-serve only. There are no fees, but donations are gratefully accepted. The closest town is Alpine, 25 miles south on US 191.
