BLM Painted Rocks Petroglyphs Campground is a great spot for a peaceful retreat or dry camping getaway. Located 12 miles north of Interstate 8, the campground has a paved-road access and one low-water crossing. The campground has 60 level sites with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. There is no power, sewer, or water, and the fee is $8.00 a night, discounted with a national park access pass. The sites are very large, well-spaced, and provide ample solitude. There is also a short path around the painted rock exhibit and petroglyphs to explore. Cell service on Verizon and ATT are excellent, but TMobile is weak extended. Firewood can be purchased from the Chevron Station in Gila Bend. The campground is a great spot for stargazing, and the surrounding desert landscape provides beautiful sunsets.

Painted Rock Petroglyph Campground is a historic campground located in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. The campground offers 59 individual campsites and two large group sites featuring picnic tables and steel fire rings. There is no water or electric hookups at the campground, but there are two vault toilets and trash collection. The neighboring day-use site has two shaded picnic areas with tables and charcoal grills. The campground is set between impressive geologic features such as Oatman Mountain and the Painted Rock Mountains, offering scenic panoramic views and plenty of opportunities for solitude and vast night skies. The surrounding area features a diverse Sonoran Desert plant community including the iconic saguaro cactus, various cholla species, barrel cactus, creosote bush, and both ironwood and palo verde trees. The area is home to a large population of desert mule deer and many other desert species such as kit fox, Gambel’s quail, chuckwalla, and desert iguana.
