What others are saying about this campground
Owl Canyon is a hidden gem located in the white limestone hills near Barstow, California. It is a perfect spot for camping, with a range of sites from Coleman pup tents to Land Yachts. It is a great place for students to come and study geology and mapping, and the area feels remote and quiet. There are no hookups, but there are several water faucets, pit toilets, and playgrounds for those camping with younger kids. Hiking trails start at the northern end of the campground, and you can drive a short distance to see colorful geological formations at Rainbow Basin. The campground is not very busy, and there is no reason not to recommend it, especially to tenters. Be warned there is a super tame fox that may try to steal food scraps. The roads in are washboarded, but navigable by any size rig. There is a campground host here, and the campground is kept clean and free of trash. There is a scenic loop that you can drive in a passenger vehicle with some of the most spectacular scenery in the US. The campsites are undergoing renovations, and the price is unbeatable.

From The Campground
Owl Canyon Campground is located within the Rainbow Basin Area of Critical Environmental Concern in California. The campground is situated in a diverse landscape of hills, canyons, and washes, with multicolored rock walls and mesas that offer many photographic opportunities. The washes are good hiking trails for experiencing the area's natural beauty. Wildlife viewing is best during early morning and evening hours. The campground is closed to vehicle travel to protect the vegetation and wildlife in the area. The Fossil Canyon Loop Road is an interesting route for vehicle touring. This one-way narrow dirt road is best driven with a high clearance or four-wheel drive vehicles. Weather extremes and poisonous snakes are desert hazards common to this area. Rainbow Basin has a flash flood risk as well. Avoid low-lying areas during storms and remember that rain upstream can cause flooding even though it is not raining in the immediate area.
