American River Resort is a rustic campground located on the American River in Coloma, California. The resort offers a variety of campsites, ranging from spacious pull-through sites to narrow sites with dirt parking. It is close to Marshall Gold Discovery State Park and Placerville, and offers easy access to the American River Rafting off of Highway 49. The resort is clean and the staff is friendly and helpful, although the office staff can be rude at times. Unfortunately, there is no wifi service or cell coverage at the campground, and the fire pits are often full of trash. The roads in the park can be challenging to maneuver, so it is important to be confident when backing your rig down the hill. There is an additional charge for extra people, and the showers and restrooms are in a deplorable condition. However, the views of the river and the deer wandering through the park are beautiful, and the history of the start of the gold rush is fascinating.
