GenieSummary

Basalt Campground is a great place to stay for a weekend getaway. Located in the San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area, it is a mile away from the reservoir and can be hot, dusty, and windy, especially in the afternoons. There are plenty of boat ramps and parking areas nearby along the lake for people to use to boat, swim, fish, etc. The campsites are large and spaced apart generously, with each having a picnic table and a firepit/grill combo. The bathrooms are clean and well stocked and the showers are great. Unfortunately, there is no where to go here to escape the heat unless you head a few miles into town. There are lots of gnats around the sites and bathrooms, so be sure to bring bug spray. Santa Nella is close by to stock up on supplies. You can reserve online, but it doesnt let you pick a specific campsite. Once you get there, the ranger assigns you a spot. This campground, as well as the day use area, are closed for the foreseeable future due to a safety of dams project.

From The Campground

Nestled in the grassy hills of the western San Joaquin Valley near historic Pacheco Pass, San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area is noted for boating, board sailing, camping, and picnicking. But it's anglers who find the unit's three lakes most inviting.
