GenieSummary

Henry Coe State Park is a great spot for a weekend getaway or short camping trip from the San Francisco Bay Area. The Coe Ranch campground has several tent-only campsites that can be reserved online and have parking for vehicles in a small parking area ~20-100 feet from the campsites. Each site has a picnic table and a fire pit, with enough of trees and privacy. The camp is a great base for hikes and bike rides all over the park, and the scenic views of oak woodlands and the valley below make it a great spot to run away from Bay Area noise and rush. There is a small visitor center close to the entrance, with a few souvenirs and some snacks and drinks. The campground is primitive, with no showers and only vault toilets and restroom near visitor center (2 min walk from campground). Dogs are allowed in the campground. There are many great hiking opportunities, with beautiful wildflower displays in March and April, and numerous opportunities for enjoying the plants and wildlife seen along the hiking trails. There is a camp book store, which has some items for sale, including many field guides to wildlife and plants in the park. Obtaining a permit from the ranger station is necessary, and visitors must pick a district to camp in the first night to limit the amount of campers in a region per night. There is a creek for fresh water usage, but no facilities so visitors must follow Leave No Trace guidelines. The campground is quite remote and there are a good amount of sites with tree cover and shade. It is possible to buy firewood on site, but visitors may want to bring some. The ground is quite compacted, so an adequately thick sleeping pad is recommended. There are signs warning of ticks in the area, so visitors should be aware. Sounds travels easily here, so depending on timing, it could get a bit disturbing by neighbors.
