From The Campground
Providence Mountains State Recreation Area is a beautiful park located in the eastern Mojave Desert. The park is home to the Mitchell Caverns, which include two main caves named El Pakiva and Tecopa. Visitors can take tours of the caverns and see spectacular limestone formations such as stalagmites, stalactites, helictites, lily pads, draperies, curtains, and cave coral. The park also offers three trails for hiking, including the Cave Trail, Mary Beal Nature Trail, and Niña Mora Trail. Visitors can view a variety of wildlife and vegetation, including bighorn sheep, mountain lions, coyotes, bobcats, badgers, squirrels, rabbits, pinon pines, junipers, wildflowers, Mojave and banana yucca, cholla, and barrel cactus. The park has a rich history, including the presence of the Chemehuevi people for thousands of years and the resort run by Jack and Ida Mitchell from 1934 to 1954. Visitors should come prepared with plenty of water, food, sunscreen, appropriate clothing and shoes, and a map, as cell phone coverage is spotty and nonexistent. Gas stations and food options are not available within 25 miles of the park.
