Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve in Santee, California is a government-run facility that offers large and easy-to-access camp sites at an OK value. Despite being located near San Diego, it has limited cell coverage, with AT&T phone and data being the best option. The campsites are well-spaced and kept clean. There are reserved lakes for fishing and bird watching right from the campsite, as well as a pool, spa, playground, dog park, RV repair vendor list, and a restaurant (currently undergoing vendor transition). The restrooms and showers are well maintained, with no additional charge. However, the access to the facility and the camper-only gate are a bit difficult to navigate. The sites are sandy dirt and mud, with no paved patios, so beware of rain.

Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve is a 190-acre park that offers a variety of activities for visitors. The park features fishing, picnicking, boating, playgrounds, sprayground, birding, and cabins. The campground offers RV storage, a clubhouse, and various events throughout the year. The park also hosts Lights at the Lake in 2022.
