The Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is a popular destination for off-road vehicle enthusiasts. The recreation area is divided into different zones, with some areas open to all types of vehicle recreation and others closed to motorized vehicles. The North Algodones Dunes Wilderness offers a tranquil alternative to the fast-paced action of the main dunes, with visitors welcome to walk or ride horses in this remote area. Permits are required from October 1 through April 15 each year, and fees vary depending on the type of permit purchased. Visitors are asked to comply with CDC, BLM, state, and county COVID guidelines for good hygiene, staying home when sick, and social distancing to include the wearing of face coverings.
