Base Camp is a new, well-maintained campground located in the San Luis Valley, nestled between the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the San Juan Mountains. It offers spacious, level pull-through sites with picnic tables and fire pits, as well as private, tiled shower and restroom facilities. The campground is pet-friendly and has full hook-ups, good water pressure and reliable internet. Although there is no shade or grass, the owners have planted trees which will eventually provide some protection from the sun and wind. Base Camp is conveniently located near Great Sand Dunes National Park, and is just off the highway, although noise is not a problem. There is a camp host onsite, as well as an automated reservation and check-in system. Unfortunately, there is no official campground office or store, and there is no trash receptacle in the overflow lot. All in all, Base Camp is a great find and offers good value for money.
