Bear Lake Campground is a beautiful and secluded campsite run by the National Forest Service, located two hours west of Trinidad, Colorado and 45 minutes from La Veta. The site is accessed off of scenic highway 12, and requires a 5 mile drive up a dirt and gravel road with multiple switchbacks. The lake is full of trout and provides a great opportunity for fishing. The campsites have some privacy depending on the site, and each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and ample parking. There are also great trails for hiking and ATVs, and campers frequently run into bears. The views driving up from the main road are stunning, and the lake is very pretty. No phone reception is available, making it a great place to relax and enjoy nature. The camp host is very friendly and the vault toilets are clean. Highly recommended for a peaceful and beautiful camping experience.
