Pinon Flats Campground is a National Park Service campground located in the grass of the high plains at the base of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, Great Sand Dunes and along the Medano Creek. It offers a unique camping experience in one of the most biologically diverse areas in Southern Colorado. The campground is tidy with trees, bbq pits, and space between camp spots, and each site has its own bear box. Its a great spot for RV and tent camping, and visitors can enjoy the nearby attractions such as Zapata Falls, San Luis Wildlife Area, Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Montville Nature Trail, and the Medano Creek Lakes. The campground also has a camp store with firewood and water, and a short walk away is the visitor center along a beautiful trail that offers access into the wilderness area. The Oasis right outside the park is a great place to stop and eat or grab some last minute supplies. The campground is also close to the dunes parking lot, where visitors can go for a dip in the Medosa creek or use the rinsing off showers. Visitors can also rent a sand board in nearby Alamosa and enjoy a wild ride down the Dune. Storms are common in the area, and the campground is close to the amphitheater where visitors can enjoy nightly programs. The stars are beautiful at night, and the campground is a great spot to enjoy the cool mornings and evenings.

From The Campground

Piñon Flats Campground is located inside Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. It is open from April through October and offers a unique camping experience with stunning views of the sand dunes. The campground has 88 sites, including tent-only sites, RV sites with full hookups, and group sites. There are also restrooms, showers, and a camp store available for campers.
