GenieSummary

Ruby Mountain Campground in Nathrop, CO is a beautiful and basic campground that is part of the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area. It has great campsites with an awesome view of the mountains, and some sites also have a view of the river. However, if youre not by the river, there isnt much shade. The address can be tricky to find, so use the coordinates instead. One minor issue worth noting is that the toilet paper is sometimes not restocked. Its further than you might expect, but the $28 per night fee is worth it, especially if you have been boondocking. Reservations are recommended, but there were many open spots during one reviewers stay. The tent area is located on top of the campground, with the fire ring and dining table below it, and your car parked in the lower level. Some camp sites along the river are worth the visit. Fishing is also an option and is highly recommended, especially with kids. There are many 4x4 trials in the Four Mile travel Management Area, but they are not suitable for All Wheel Drive vehicles. Overall, the Ruby Mountain Campground is a great place to stay, with some of the best whitewater rapids in the world nearby.

From The Campground

The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is recognized as one of the nation's most popular whitewater rafting and kayaking locations. The Arkansas River is the most commercially rafted river in the United States and is noted for its world-class fishery, which provides an excellent opportunity for anglers to test their skills at catching brown and rainbow trout. AHRA visitors also enjoy camping, hiking, picnicking, wildlife watching, mountain biking, rock climbing, and even gold panning along the river’s shores, deep canyons, broad valleys, and towering mountain peaks found within the upper Arkansas River valley. The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is a landmark cooperative effort between Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW), the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the US Forest Service (USFS).  Through this partnership, the agencies provide visitors with outstanding recreation opportunities and care for the nationally significant natural resources of the Upper Arkansas River Valley.
