What others are saying about this campground
Alta Lakes is a stunning campground located in the high alpine of the San Juan Mountains, just outside of Telluride. It is an ideal spot for camping, with stunning lake views, snow-capped mountain tops, and wildflowers in abundance. The road to the campground is narrow and winding, and can be difficult to traverse in a regular car. It is recommended to have a 4-wheel drive vehicle to make the journey. The campground features 20 designated camping spots with fire rings and portapotties nearby. The camping spots are well spread out, but can be difficult to find level ground for tents. There is an abandoned mining town nearby and plenty of opportunities to hike and explore the areas history. The lake is beautifully blue with gray snow covered peaks surrounding it, and visitors can camp in a few spots around the lake or make their own off the shore. There is also a nearby Observatory, and visitors can enjoy SUPs, kayaks, and more on the lake. It can be heavily used by locals, so be sure to come early to get the best spot. It can get chilly at night, so bring warm clothes and be prepared for bear prevention.
