Cayo Costa State Park is a primitive camping ground located off the coast of SW Florida, accessible only by ferry (must reserve ahead) or private boat. The park offers a few basic cabins to rent, as well as plenty of tent sites, and carts to help transport your gear off the dock. There are plenty of areas to explore, including an old cemetery, and plenty of wildlife to observe. The beach is busy during summer break, but many folks come out for the day only. The island is fun to explore, and the night sky is perfect for stargazing. There are no amenities such as electricity or air conditioning, and the island is home to plenty of mosquitos, no-see-ums, and chiggers, so bring plenty of bug spray. There is a camp store offering snacks, cold drinks, firewood, and ice, and restrooms and potable water are available. The ferry typically travels to the island every day, and there is a tram that takes you from the docks to the camping area. Rats are a common occurrence, so make sure to keep a clean camp site and store all food securely.
From The Campground
Cayo Costa State Park is an unspoiled Gulf Coast island accessible only by boat or kayak. It features 9 miles of undeveloped shoreline for swimming, snorkeling, shelling, fishing, bird-watching and exploration along with several walking and bicycling trails through the island’s interior. Shorebirds are numerous, and one might spot manatees, porpoises and sea turtles offshore. Campsites and cabins are available for overnight stays, and a ferry service runs to the island from several mainland locations. Visitors are reminded that camping is allowed only in designated sites in the campground on Cayo Costa.
