What others are saying about this campground
Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park is a large and well-maintained campground located in a remote area among ancient sinkholes. It offers a variety of activities, such as well-blazed trails, interesting flora, fauna, and geology, a swimming beach and kids playground with picnic pavillions, and a boardwalk trail along the ravine with native needle palms and ferns. The campground has several loops, including the Sandhill and Lakeview loops, which offer sites with water and electric hookups, as well as the Turkey Oak loop, which is suitable for tents. The dump station is located in the park, but is not convenient for the Sandhill or Turkey Oak loops. The park is very dark at night, and is generally quiet, with only distant road noise and occasional gunfire from the nearby national guard base. Cell phone coverage is just OK, with good ATT and weak Verizon signals. The park is in the midst of a major project to restore natural grasses, and is not too pretty right now, but will be in the future. It is a great place for a long weekend, with some great hiking trails and a good playground.

From The Campground

Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park is one of Florida's oldest state parks, developed and constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The park is located on rolling sandhills on the north central ridge of Florida with one of the few remaining examples of an old-growth stand of longleaf pines. Visitors to the park can enjoy hiking and wildlife viewing along the park's nature trails and a 5.44-mile stretch of the Florida National Scenic Trail. Visitors also can swim or fish in Little Lake Johnson or spend a lazy afternoon canoeing. A large picnic area with tables and grills, pavilions and a playground is available for visitors to enjoy. Nestled under the trees are three campgrounds with water and electricity provided. Primitive campsites for small or large groups are available as are fully equipped lakefront vacation cabins, some of which were built by the CCC.
