St. Lucie South is a small, quiet campground run by the US Army Corps of Engineers. It is tucked away in a beautiful green spot next to the St. Lucie Canal and is a great place to get away for a weekend. The campground offers nine RV sites with level and paved concrete pads, a sheltered picnic table, a fire ring, and an elevated grill in a gravel space adjoining the concrete pad. There are also primitive tent sites with a tree, a gravel tent pad, and a small picnic shelter. All RV sites have water and 30 and 50 amp service, and there is a dump station near the exit. Free WiFi is available at the visitor center during business hours, with outdoor covered seating overlooking the waterway. The grounds and bathhouse are kept spotless and noise after hours is not an issue. There are lots of interesting animals to observe here, including flying fish, big tree lizards, big frogs, and possibly gators. The campground is close to Interstate 95 and the Florida Turnpike for easy access, and there are restaurants and conveniences just minutes away. Verizon cell service is very good and there are nearby beaches. The staff are friendly and hardworking, and they check each site and clean it up after each party leaves. This campground is a great value for seniors with a Golden Eagle Pass.
