Hells Gate State Park is a great campground for those looking for plenty of activities. Located in a state park, campers can enjoy fishing, hiking, swimming, boating, disc golf, volleyball, and mountain biking. The camp spots are close together and there is little privacy, making it a great spot for younger children. The park is parklike with some trees, but overall there is little privacy on the loops. The bathrooms have free showers, and the campground is wheelchair accessible. There are full hookups in the Aspen and Birch Loops, and a short walk to a beach for swimming and launching kayaks. There is also a Lewis and Clark Discovery Center and a disc golf course. The jet boats on the river may be noisy on the weekends, but the Birch Loop is well shielded from the river by mature trees. The campground is clean and well maintained, and the staff is helpful.

Hells Gate State Park offers over 80 grassy campsites along the shores of the Snake River, with quiet and scenic views. The park is situated at the lowest elevation in Idaho, providing a long season of warm weather. Visitors can enjoy a jet boat ride up the Snake River, fishing for steelhead, picnicking under shade trees, or a leisurely bike ride on the Clearwater and Snake River trail. The park also features the Lewis and Clark Discovery Center and Jack O'Connor Hunting Heritage Education Center, as well as interpretive exhibits on the Nez Perce National Historic Park.
