Ferne Cliffe State Park is a hidden gem tucked away in the Shawnee National Forest of southern Illinois. It is a great spot for camping, hiking, rock climbing, and repelling. The park features limestone bluffs, naturally forested woodlands, cliff caves, and several small waterfalls. There are several campgrounds to choose from, including modern, primitive, youth groups, backpack, and equestrian. The primitive sites require that you park your vehicle and carry in your equipment (less than 100 feet). The sites are mostly shaded and level, and all have at least 30 amp service. There is a pit toilet and water source at each site, and a water spigot available at site 10. There are also several hiking trails throughout the park, including a short trail to the Ferne Clyffe Waterfall. Other nearby attractions include the Garden of the Gods wilderness, the Cache River Preserve, and the Tunnel Hill bike trail. The campground is heavily treed, but there are plenty of open spots for portable dishes. There is also a nice and clean bathroom and shower house in the middle of the campground.
