What others are saying about this campground
Red Bud Campground in Shawnee National Forests Bell Smith Springs Recreational Area is a remote and peaceful campground, perfect for those looking to explore nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With 21 campsites, each with a fire ring, lantern post, and picnic table, there is plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. There are miles of trails to explore, with canyons, waterfalls, and the famous cliff jumps of Bell Springs. Guests can cool off in the springs, or take a dip in the swimming hole. There is no shower, but the springs offer a refreshing soak after a long day of hiking. The campground is well-maintained and rarely used, making it a great place for a private getaway. Be aware of the poison ivy in the woods and the potential for copperheads and snakes. There is a water spigot and vault toilets, but no electricity. There is also a pay box where guests can put in cash or check with an envelope. The area is quiet and peaceful, but can be noisy at night with people playing music and partying. Despite this, Red Bud Campground is a great spot for camping, hiking, and swimming, and is definitely worth the visit.

From The Campground
Bell Smith Springs is one of the most beautiful recreation areas the Shawnee National Forest has to offer. It contains a series of clear, rocky streams and scenic canyons bordered by high sandstone cliffs and an abundance of vegetation unique to Illinois. The trail system consists of eight miles of interconnected trails featuring strange and wonderful rock formations, such as Devil's Backbone, Boulder Falls and a natural rock bridge. Hiking this system of trails is a favorite activity because of the rock features, scenic overlooks, hidden springs and lush flora and fauna.
