What others are saying about this campground
New Salem State Park Campground is a beautiful, wooded campground located in a shady oak forest, providing a peaceful and breezy atmosphere. The sites are level and shady with blacktop drives and pads, and conveniently located common water spigots and sewer dump. The campground is adjacent to Lincolns New Salem State Historic Site, a reconstructed village with a very interesting visitors center and outdoor theater with evening performances during the summer. The campground is electric only, with 30 or 50 amp posts, and water and dump stations are available. It is a great home base for visiting the nearby Lincoln sites in Springfield, and the camp host is very helpful and friendly. The restrooms and showers are clean, although a bit dated, and the tavern across the road has good food. The campground is a great place to stay for a night and visit the New Salem site, and it was only about 30% full when we stayed there.

From The Campground
Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site is a reconstruction of the village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood. The site is located about 2 miles South of Petersburg and about 20 miles Northwest of Springfield. Visitors can watch an orientation film about New Salem and Abraham Lincoln in the Visitors Center, and take a virtual tour of the site online. The site offers a full-service restaurant, country store, and theater in the park. The Pioneer Life Summer Day Camp is also available. The site is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9am to 4pm from November through April, and from 9am to 5pm from May through October. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Donations to the site are greatly appreciated and help with the necessary upkeep of this highly visited and beloved historic site.
