Raccoon State Recreation Area | Cecil M Harden Lake is a beautiful campground located in the heart of historic covered bridge country, just 50 miles West of Indianapolis. The campground offers easy beach access from the campground via a paved walk/bike path, a well-stocked camp store at the entrance, well-maintained bath house facilities, active interpretive Naturalist programs, and numerous hiking trail opportunities. The campground has a variety of sites, including pull-throughs and non-electric sites, as well as electric sites with water hook-ups. There are also pit toilets scattered around the campground, and a dump station. The lake views are partially obscured by trees, but there is a trail that leads down to the lake. The camp store is very nice and has a great selection of ice cream treats. The park also has a fishing pier, multiple boat ramps, and a bike, walking, and rollerblading path. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the park is well-maintained. The only drawback is that there is only one shower stall available in the Mens and Womens restrooms in the non-electric area. The park can get busy on the weekends, and the traffic can be heavy, but overall it is a great campground for exploring the area and enjoying the outdoors.
From The Campground
Raccoon State Recreation Area is a beautiful property that includes the Raccoon State Recreation Area and Historic Mansfield Roller Mill. The area is surrounded by native forest and large rock outcrops line the upper part of Big Raccoon Creek. Cecil M. Harden Lake resulted from the damming of the creek for flood control. The lake also provides recreation, wildlife management and economic benefits. A variety of fish, flora and fauna can be viewed at the property. Nearby Historic Mansfield Roller Mill is a preserved, working example of industrialization in Indiana at the turn of the 20th century. This 1880s flour mill uses machinery from that time to show visitors how flour and cornmeal were processed from wheat and corn. It is an almost complete and unchanged example of flour mills from this time period.
