Shades State Park is a great place to unplug and reconnect with nature. Located north of Turkey Run State Park, it offers all the hiking and scenic terrain with less amenities and crowds. The campground has about a hundred basic camping sites (non-electric) with restrooms and bath house. There are multiple pit toilets, water pumps, and also an electric bathroom. The sites are close but most have trees separating them for privacy. The hiking trails range in difficulty, so read the park pamphlet before setting out. The park roads are easy to walk, and trails abound! The big draw at Shades State Park is hiking the great trails, canoeing/kayaking on Sugar Creek, and seeing a covered bridge or two. Pine Hills Nature Preserve (on east end of park) is also open to park visitors for hiking and wildlife viewing. It is about 2 miles from a private canoe/kayak outfitter that offers a variety of trips & rentals. Be sure to visit Turkey Run, Clifty Pines and Sugar Creek Canoes for a jam packed weekend full of fun.

Shades State Park is a beautiful campground located in Waveland, Indiana. The park offers a variety of camping options including non-electric sites, backpack sites, and canoe camps. There are also picnic areas with shelters available for reservation. The park features several hiking trails of varying difficulty, including the Ravine Hiking Challenge. Fishing is also available in the park. Interpretive naturalist services are available seasonally. Shades State Park is known for having one of the darkest skies in Indiana, making it a popular destination for astronomy groups. The park also features Pine Hills Nature Preserve, which offers spectacular topography for those willing to take a fairly long hike.
