GenieSummary

This campground is a hidden gem just outside of Des Moines. It is a small park with only about 20 spots, but it is easy to get a spot without reserving ahead. The tent areas are right next to the water, making it a serene and peaceful place to camp. The winding, green waterways are great for canoeing, although water sports like kayaking are not an option right now due to the low and muddy water. There are plenty of trails to hike and some really nice views of the prairies. The campground has fire pits, tables, bathrooms with showers, and porta-potties in some campgrounds. There is also a shooting range, dog training area, and fishing and canoeing when there is enough water. Make sure to bring bug spray and be aware that the park closes at 10:30.

From The Campground

Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt is a magnificent wildlife area that sustains over 8,388+ acres of wetlands, prairies, woodlands, and old Skunk River oxbows. The Greenbelt is also a popular hunting spot. Waterfowl blinds can be reserved, as well as a trap range. Additionally, this park offers electric and non-electric campsites, picnic areas, nature trails, canoe rental, wildlife viewing platform and bird blind, and dog training areas. An enclosed shelter facility is also available for group use by reservation.
