What others are saying
Walnut Woods State Park in West Des Moines, IA provides only electric service for $11 per day. However, reviews mention that the park is not very well suited for RV camping, as the campsites are difficult to access for larger vehicles. Additionally, there are no restrooms or water facilities. Several negative reviews mention a number of homeless people living in the park, some with shabby RVs and cars. Some of these people reportedly stayed in the park for weeks at a time. Visitors were concerned about their safety and the safety of their belongings due to the presence of homeless people who appeared to go through trash cans looking for items to keep. Some reported finding their trash gone through the day after they disposed of it. There is apparently no supervision at the park as some visitors noted the office was locked when it should have been open.

From The Campground

Walnut Woods State Park is a tranquil destination for anyone seeking the outdoors not far from the state’s capital city. The park is home to Iowa’s largest stand of black walnut trees, with one of the park system’s finest examples of a 1930s CCC-era lodge. Nearby, launch a canoe at the Purple Martin Water Resource Area or observe the purple martins that inhabit the area. These fascinating birds have their own unique establishment near the lake.
