Fort Boonesborough State Park is a nicely wooded campground located near Lexington, Kentucky. It is conveniently located just 6 miles from I-75 and is a great base camp for exploring the Blue Grass Region and the city of Lexington and its surrounding horse farms. The park offers a variety of activities, including a living history museum, a pool, boat launch, birding, modern campground facilities, tennis courts, putt-putt, horseshoe pits, an activity center stocked with games, a pool, and a nice old fort nearby, laundry facilities, volleyball, and more. The sites are clean, well-shaded, and include fire rings and picnic tables. Unfortunately, the campground is located near an asphalt plant that runs from early morning to dinner time, and a rock quarry that can be noisy. Additionally, the sewage processing building near the full hookup sites is in bad shape. The staff at the gate can be a little unprofessional, and the roads can be crowded with campers and kids on bikes and skateboards. However, the park is clean and well-maintained, and the amenities make it a great spot for a camping trip.
From The Campground
Fort Boonesborough State Park is a historic park that offers visitors a chance to stroll the original fort site of Daniel Boone and settlers. The park has been reconstructed as a working fort complete with cabins, blockhouses, and furnishings. Resident artisans perform craft demonstrations and give modern-day visitors a true sense of what life was like for pioneers in Kentucky. The park also offers camping on the banks of the Kentucky River year-round, with 166 sites that have electricity and water hookups, 18 of which have full hookups. There are 2 central service buildings and 3 dump stations. An activities building can accommodate 150 people, and central service buildings provide showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities. The park also has a gift shop that sells handmade pioneer items, including lye soap, hand-dipped candles, and pottery. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, miniature golf, and wildlife viewing. The Kentucky River Museum, a newer addition to Fort Boonesborough State Park, provides visitors with insight into the lives of families who lived on the river and worked the locks and dams in the 1900s.
