What others are saying
Palmetto Island State Park is a beautiful state park located in Abbeville, LA. The park offers spacious campsites typical of state parks, and many of the sites have water, electric, and full hook-ups. While cell service is good for some providers, certain devices might not work in this remote location. The park is situated in a dense swamp-forest environment with ponds, lagoons, and river access. Visitors can rent canoes or fish in the ponds and river. There are also picnic areas, hiking trails, and observation platforms. The park is popular for bicycling, canoeing, fishing, and hiking. Wildlife such as alligators, jumping fish, deer, and opossums can be spotted during a visit. The park has well-maintained roads and is easy to access from State Route 82. However, there is a bridge near Perry with a height clearance of 14 feet. Visitors should be aware that this is an active alligator and bear area and should take precautions such as bringing bug spray. One visitor found the nearby town of Abbeville to be a charming location for a small-town revival. Other visitors enjoyed the clean bathrooms and laundry facility and big take one/leave one library. Some campsites are near the area where maintenance work is being done, so visitors should inquire about these areas before their arrival. Palmetto Island State Park is a great location for those who want to experience the heart of Cajun country and enjoy outdoor activities in a remote location.

From The Campground

Palmetto Island State Park is located on the Vermilion River in Louisiana and offers a real south Louisiana outdoors experience. The park features a boat launch for fishing and boating, interior lagoons for canoeing and kayaking, and 95 campsites for RV camping. Overnight guests can also stay in one of six vacation cabins, each sleeping up to 8 people comfortably. The visitor center complex includes a water playground, bathhouse, and multi-purpose room for events. The park is named after the ever-present palmetto plants, which are echoed in many of the architectural elements around the park.
