GenieSummary
Desert of Maine in Freeport, ME is a small, quiet campground that borders the actual desert of Maine. The campground is extremely well maintained and the sites are fairly spacious. The bathhouse/restrooms/showers are beautiful and very clean, featuring cedar-lined walls that smell amazing. Each shower is in its separate suite, accessed through a separate entrance. They have a nice putt-putt course, and you can walk through the desert for free after 5 pm. The owner is hilarious and has a fantastic sense of humor. It is perfect for small campers with personality; no big rigs allowed. It is very close to Freeport and Portland, making it convenient for shopping at outlets like LL Bean.
From The Campground
The Desert of Maine Campground is a quiet and secluded campground surrounded by tall pines, sandy dunes, and a gentle stream. It features a beautifully renovated bath house, strong WiFi, and water & electricity available at most sites. The campground is located just 2 miles north of exit 20 off of 295, at the dead end of Desert Rd. The Desert of Maine itself is a weird and wonderful place, with rich history going back to the 1800s, and it has been an iconic tourist destination in Maine for nearly 100 years. It is fun, educational, beautiful--well-suited for families with kids, history buffs, nature lovers, science nerds, and curious travelers.
