GenieSummary

Hermit Island Campground is a beautiful coastal campground located in Maine. It is a secluded spot with lots of natural beauty, perfect for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The campground offers a variety of sites, from cliffs right above the water, to sandy coves, to sites in the woods. There is also a camp store, snack shack, and a Kelp Shed with arcade games and pool tables. The campground has strict rules about who is allowed in, ensuring that it remains private and quiet. The main drawback is that reservations must be made far in advance, unless you are lucky enough to get a last minute spot. Activities include swimming, kayaking, biking, and hiking. There are also live music events on the weekends. The campground is well-suited for tent and pop up campers, but not for 5th wheels. The store is reasonably priced and has all the basics, and the Kelp Shed has snacks and treats. Be sure to bring bug spray and thermocells, as the bugs can be quite bad. There is no cell service in the campground, but spotty coverage on the road leading up to it. Hermit Island is a great place for those looking for a peaceful, natural camping experience.

From The Campground

Hermit Island is a family-oriented seasonal campground with rustic sites for tents and pop-up trailers. It started in 1952 and remains largely unchanged - rustic, slow-paced, and in tune with the natural environment. There are 271 sites spread across the southern end of the island, each unique. The campground welcomes campers with tents, pop-up trailers (up to 25'), and truck campers, but no RVs or hard-topped campers. Although dogs are loved, they are not allowed to camp with you. Each campsite has a fire pit, a picnic table, room for your equipment, and a parking space for one car. There are free hot showers. Bathrooms - flushing toilets, composting toilets, porto-potties, and pit toilets - are located across the campground and near the beaches. The campground has several trails, beaches, and boats for rent. The Snack Bar serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner until 8:30. The camp store sells groceries, beer and wine, ice, wood, batteries, beach toys, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a small selection of camping gear. The Gift Shop sells a small selection of items such as t-shirts, mugs, sea-glass jewelry, and books.
