Fort Frederick State Park is a great campground for those looking for a peaceful and private getaway. Located right on the Potomac river, the campground offers 20-30 sites with fire rings and picnic tables. There is a general store nearby with hot showers and the campground also has toilets and portapotties. You can swim, kayak, fish, hike, or bike here and there is a historic fort and nearby buildings to explore. The sites are level and close together, but there is a beaver pond trail and a cool path down to the river. There are no hookups, but there is a discount available for those with a MD Senior pass. The visitor center is closed, but the ranger is available to check-in. Prices are reasonable and the setting is lovely.
From The Campground
Fort Frederick State Park offers family and youth group camping along the Potomac River. The family campsites are equipped with stone dust camping pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern posts. Portable toilets are available in the campground from the first Saturday in May to the first Sunday in November, and a comfort station with flush toilets and rinse off stations is available near the parking lot for the fort. Potable water and a dumpster for campsite guests are located near the railroad tracks, 3/5 of a mile from the campground. Tent camping is available from the first Saturday in May to the first Sunday in November, while self-contained camping units may camp year-round. Four youth group campsites are also available for organized youth groups from the first Saturday in May to the first Sunday in November.
