Gambrill State Park is the perfect destination for those looking for a convenient and relaxing camping experience. Located just off the highway and only an hour away from Baltimore and DC, the park is a great middle point between Gettysburg and Antietam Battlefields and is rich in Civil War history. The park offers hot showers and multiple stalls in the restroom facility, as well as a fresh water spout and a small book exchange. There are multiple sites to choose from, some with more privacy than others. Site 16 is the furthest away from other campers and provides plenty of space for multiple tents. The park is also great for outdoor enthusiasts, as Cunningham Falls, Catoctin Mountain, and Greenbrier SP are all a short drive away. The nearby cities of Frederick and Middletown offer all modern conveniences, and the park is located close to the Western MD Rail Trail and the C & O Canal for bike riding. The park is self service and has a playground with a swing set, as well as a fishing pond and trails for all activity levels. The campground is in a forest, with paved roads and gravel sites, and the bath house is large and well-maintained. Masks are required for places where social distancing is difficult, and the staff is friendly and helpful.

From The Campground

Gambrill State Park is a beautiful mountain park, located on the ridge of the Catoctin Mountains in Frederick County. Its most popular feature is the 16 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The park is separated into two areas, the Rock Run area and the High Knob area. From the 1600-foot High Knob, three stone overlooks offer breathtaking views of the Frederick and Middletown Valleys, then continue to the northern reaches of the Shenandoah Mountains. The High Knob area also offers wooded picnic areas, three picnic shelters and a large stone lodge, called the Tea Room. The picnic shelters and the Tea Room are available for reservation. The Rock Run area offers a cozy family-style campground, a picnic area and a small pond for fishing.
