GenieSummary

DeTour State Forest Campground is a remote and peaceful campground located on the shores of Lake Huron in Michigan. With twenty spacious sites, it is perfect for groups, RVs, and private camping. The campground offers plenty of privacy between sites, and a few sites have direct trail access to the beach. The woods are filled with dead trees for firewood, and poison sumac which is warned about on the information board. There is standing water in the woods which can make for thick mosquitoes during the day and night. The lake has small rocks in the shallow water, but beyond that is a sandy lake bottom perfect for swimming and playing. The nearby town of DeTour Village offers ice, bottled water, a grocery, and a couple of restaurants. The road into the campground is full of potholes and tight corners, making it difficult for vehicles longer than 25 feet. While the campground was near max capacity on a Thursday night, it completely cleared out on Sunday night. The stars at night are beautiful and the amount of bird songs throughout the park are amazing. It is a great place to tent camp, hike, bike, and paddle. Be aware of the St. Mary’s River as it is a major shipping channel filled with huge freighters.
