Myre Big Island State Park is a beautiful campground located in Minnesota, offering two campgrounds with private, shady sites. The lake is great for kayaking, and the park has 20+ miles of hiking trails through prairies, woodlands, and along the lake. The park also offers geocashing (and free GPS rental), as well as canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, and a small fishing boat that can be rented. The White Fox campground is a more traditional state park setting with many electric sites, while Big Island is heavily wooded, with very large sites, some relatively private. There is a Waterfowl Observation Blind overlooking a march about 100 yards off the main trail. The park is dog friendly and wildlife such as deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and birds are active near the trails and campgrounds. The park is also conveniently located near Albert Lea, with the Blazing Star State Trail running 5 miles west directly into Albert Lea. The campsites are not level and pot holed likely due to an excessive amount of rain that fell this year, and the lake attracts a lot of mosquitoes. Despite this, the people who work there are incredibly kind and welcoming, and the park offers a full refund for any unused firewood.
From The Campground
Myre-Big Island State Park is a beautiful park located in Minnesota. The park offers camping, hiking, fishing, boating, and nature viewing opportunities. The park has three campgrounds: Yellow Medicine River Campground, horse campground, and backpack/watercraft campground. Self-payment envelopes are no longer accepted on site. The highway that used to run through the park has been permanently closed. There is now an unavoidable 16 to 20 mile drive to get from Yellow Medicine Campground on the east side to the park office, main entrance or horse campground on the west side. Be aware that Google Maps and most other map and GPS apps are still routing people down the closed highway to get between the park office and the campgrounds. This will not work! Use the provided directions and coordinates in your GPS instead to get to the horse campground, the backpack/watercraft campground, or the Yellow Medicine River Campground.
