GenieSummary

Winnie Dam is a high quality, well-maintained federal campground sponsored and maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. It is located adjacent to the Dam that marks the outlet of the Mississippi River from Lake Winnibigoshsish, offering tremendous fishing opportunities on both the lake and river. There are also nearby trails in the Chippewa National Forest for hiking and ATV riding. Campsites are basic but well-spaced, with fire rings and tables, and there are regular bathrooms and newer outhouses. There is a campground manager and resident campground host to provide advice on area recreation and other info, as well as a playground and picnic area adjacent to the boat launch. Paddlers on the Headwaters canoe trail may access the campground via a half mile portage from the Plug Hat Point boat launch above the dam, or via a short but very steep and rocky portage right at the dam on the left (east) side. The campground is one of the cleanest around, with 50 amp hookups but no water hookup in each campsite. There is a potable water spigot and a dump station. Cell service is thin but it is quiet and inexpensive. The host couple is extremely friendly and helpful, and the new shower house is immaculately maintained. DirecTV reception is available in some sites, and there is a launching ramp in the day use area on the Mississippi River. This is an ideal place to enjoy the lakes and northern woods of Minnesota.
