we headed back to the campsite. Maplewood State Park is a 92,000 acre park located in western Minnesota, just an hour away from Fargo, ND and Pelican Rapids, MN. With a variety of ecosystems, this park offers something for everyone, from great lakes to kayak and fish on, to trails for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The main campground is open year-round and offers both electric and non-electric sites, as well as camper cabins. The backpacking sites, such as GRASS, have pit toilets and small shelters. The Knoll Loop campground offers plenty of privacy and access to some great hiking, with trees and shrubs between sites for added privacy. There is a vault toilet and water spicket nearby. Each cabin has its own fire pit and picnic table area. The park also has a swimming beach and picnic area, a fish cleaning station, boat ramps, canoe rentals, and a shower house. The ranger station is two miles away and offers firewood for purchase. The park is great for families, with a family friendly feel and plenty of activities, such as fishing, swimming, and horseback riding. The fall colors are especially beautiful and the wildlife is abundant.

From The Campground

Maplewood State Park is a beautiful park located in Minnesota. The park offers a variety of recreational activities such as biking, boating, camping, canoeing/kayaking, cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting & trapping, nature viewing, off-highway vehicle riding, shooting sports, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. The park features several campgrounds including the Yellow Medicine Campground, the horse campground, and the backpack/watercraft campground. Visitors should be aware that the highway that used to run through the park has been permanently closed, and there is now an unavoidable 16 to 20 mile drive to get from Yellow Medicine Campground on the east side to the park office, main entrance or horse campground on the west side. Google Maps and most other map and GPS apps are still routing people down the closed highway to get between the park office and the campgrounds, so visitors should use the provided directions and coordinates instead.
