Leech Lake Campground is a beautiful and peaceful campground located in Walker, Minnesota. It is a Corps of Engineers (COE) park and features large, shaded sites with full hookups, a free laundry, short trails, and plenty of areas to walk the dogs. The campground is well maintained and the volunteer camp hosts are friendly and dedicated to making sure campers have a great stay. AT&T and Verizon Hotspots are available and there is a mooring area for boats. Firewood is not supplied at the campground and is expensive from the launch service. The roads are paved and narrow, making it difficult to maneuver into the site for a large rig, however it is doable. Mosquitoes and horseflies can be a problem during the summer months, so it is important to bring bug spray and citronella candles. There is no swimming or kayaking allowed in the area and the nearest town is about 30 miles away.
From The Campground
Leech Lake Recreation Area is located at the junction of the Leech Lake River and the Mississippi River. It features a 294-foot control structure consisting of reinforced concrete abutments and piers supported by timber pilings with slide gates installed into five of the 25 6-foot sluiceways and one 12-foot log sluice. The Leech Lake dam tender’s house was built between 1902 and 1904. The dwelling was oriented north with a view of the dam and marshes of Leech Lake. A garage at the rear dated from about 1910. The house has been moved and is no longer on-site. The campground offers campsites and day use facilities.
