Afton State Park is perfect for family camping, especially in Fall, Winter, and Spring. It is located just 40 minutes from Minneapolis-St. Paul and is a great beginner campground for backpackers. The campground is only a 1-mile hike in, and the last 1/4 mile or so is up a steep hill. There are a number of sites with picnic tables, fire rings, and designated spaces for tents. There are many trails for all levels of hikers, ranging from sunny meadows filled with wildflowers to areas of dense shade with majestic pines. Wildlife is abundant, with deer, black bear, squirrels, rabbits, and wild turkeys often seen. There is also a beach nearby for swimming, sunbathing, and boating. From The Campground

Afton State Park is a beautiful park located in Minnesota. The park offers a variety of recreational activities such as biking, boating, camping, canoeing/kayaking, cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting & trapping, nature viewing, off-highway vehicle riding, shooting sports, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. The park has three campgrounds: Yellow Medicine Campground on the east side, the horse campground, and the backpack/watercraft campground. The park also has the Yellow Medicine River Campground. The park has permanently closed Highway 67, which used to run through the park. Visitors should use the provided directions and coordinates to get to the park. Google Maps and most other map and GPS apps are still routing people down the closed highway to get between the park office and the campgrounds.
