GenieSummary

Grand Gulf Military Park in Port Gibson, MS, is a peaceful and secluded campground that is perfect for those who want to be off the beaten path. The park is known for its very quiet atmosphere and nice people in the museums/office. The fun history museum of the civil war is a must-see attraction. The park also offers concrete pads with full hook-ups, all of which work well. While the park is close to the Mississippi River, it is unfortunate that during certain times the river is flooding so visitors cant get down to see the river or the historic fort. Some cons include fire rings in the upper campground only, a super steep hill that can be scary to climb, and padlocked gates from 5pm-9am. However, visitors are provided with a code to access the gates. Other cons include uneven pads and steep drop-offs on all sides, a long and windy road (7 miles) into the campground, and some low-hanging branches close to the campground. The upper campground roads are narrow, rutted, and a combination of paved and gravel. Visitors should also be aware that a nuclear power plant is less than a mile from the park, and most people in the park were working there. Additionally, there were lots of mosquitoes and a general lack of upkeep. On the upside, the campground offered senior discounts, and no prepayment was required when phone reservations were made 154 days prior to arriving. The park is a good jumping-off spot for Natchez Trace and Vicksburg Battlefield and offers friendly and helpful staff. Firewood can be delivered to the campsite by staff for $5. The campground is very quiet and provides a moveable metal frame wooden picnic table, a metal fire ring (only in upper loop), and some shade. Visitors should note that campfires are not permitted in the lower loop where sites have the most shade. It is important to note that the campsite is selected from whatever is available upon arrival, so visitors have to drive around and look for their site. Street lights are available in the campground, and the entrance gate is locked overnight with a simple combination lock. Verizon provides only one bar, and there is no Wi-Fi. Overall, Grand Gulf Military Park is a peaceful and enjoyable campground, with friendly staff and plenty of historic features to explore.
