From The Campground
Wappapello Lake is a 45,000-acre project nestled in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains on the St. Francis River in Southeast Missouri. Completed in 1941, Wapppapello Lake annually provides an estimated $3.9 million in flood protection to agricultural lands and developed areas along the St. Francis River. The primary recreational opportunities at Wappapello Lake include camping, boating, fishing, hiking, and swimming. The lake has 28 recreation areas, including marinas, campgrounds, and picnic areas. The Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center offers information on the history and wildlife of the area. Wappapello Lake is also home to the mascot Ranger Willie B. Safe, created as part of a water safety awareness campaign. The lake averages nearly 2.5 million visitors per year.
