GenieSummary

Rising Sun Campground is a great spot for exploring Glacier National Park. Located on the Going To The Sun Road, the campground offers easy access to hikes, lakes, and horseback riding. There is a good variety of sites, from open to covered, and great views of the mountains and cliffs. You can also take advantage of the free shuttle bus service to access day hikes without having to drive and park. The campground is very strict about proper food storage and has bear lockers, so be sure to store items correctly. There are shared bear boxes, flush toilets, showers, and a camp store. The most popular sites fill up quickly, so plan ahead or arrive early to grab a spot. Be aware that there is a black bear population in the area. There is also a nature trail along the water and a raised walking platform in the trees. The campground is closed for 2021 according to the NPS website.

From The Campground

Rising Sun Campground is located where the mountains meet the prairies, just west of St. Mary and halfway along St. Mary Lake. Campers at Rising Sun will enjoy beautiful sunrises in the morning with Red Eagle Mountain as a backdrop, and the campground serves as a convenient base camp to many day hikes located east of Logan Pass. Some sites are open, allowing for cool breezes throughout the day, while others are located among trees, accommodating those seeking some shade and privacy. Sites 49 through 84 are generator free. Potable water is accessible in the campground, and restroom facilities are equipped with flush toilets and sinks with running water. Be sure to join a ranger for nightly evening programs. Adjacent to the campground is a camp store. The restaurant will offer take-out food service only for the summer of 2020. Shuttle service is available at the shuttle stop near the boat dock just across the Going to the Sun Road. Lace up your boots for a hike to Otokomi Lake (5.2 mi one way) from the trailhead located next to the campground. Use Glacier's free shuttle service near this campground to access other shuttle stops on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Sites are on a first-come, first-serve basis.
