From The Campground
Spring Gulch Campground is a beautiful campground located on the banks of the East Fork of the Bitterroot River. Nestled in a grassy ponderosa pine area, it offers easy access from Highway 93 and hosts 10 sites, plus 1 bicycle site, with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. It also has a picnic area and handicapped accessible facilities to include a fishing pier on the river. The campground can accommodate trailers and RV's up to 50'. There are no hook-ups but water is available. The East Fork flows west from within the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness to just south of Conner, MT where it joins the West Fork to form the Bitterroot River. The upper East Fork flows west through timbered mountain terrain, while the lower portion runs through colorful cottonwood bottom-lands. During the spring runoff, the river becomes a dangerous combination of fast water and snags. Brown, rainbow, cutthroat, Dolly, and brook trout are limited to areas with good cover, such as under-portions of the river between Sula and Conner. Winter fishing for whitefish is popular and productive (the river is closed to trout fishing in the winter). The catch along the East Fork is fairly evenly divided between bait, spin, and fly fisherman.
