Alta Campground is a perfect getaway for those looking to explore the great outdoors. Located near the Bitterroot River and surrounded by walking and hiking trails, this small campground offers about a dozen sites that can be reserved in advance. The campground is well kept and quiet, and offers stunning views of the Bitterroots. Bathrooms are clean and well stocked with toilet paper and soap, and the hosts even provide poop bags for dogs. There are plenty of activities to do, including fishing in the surrounding creeks, running side by sides up and down the mountain roads, and soaking in the mineral pool of Horse Creek Hot Springs. The camp hosts are very knowledgeable and accommodating, and are always willing to help out campers who forget things. The campground has clean and well-raked camping sites, and reservations are recommended as the sites fill up quickly. The vaulted restrooms are clean and pleasant smelling, and there is easy access to trails and 4X4/side by side trips for scenic views and wildlife viewing. Alta Campground is a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Alta Campground features 15 campsites with 1 host site, potable water, garbage, vault toilets, and handicap accessible picnic tables. Site will accept RVs or trailers to 30. Alta campground is located along the West Fork of the Bitterroot River, a popular fishing river in the area. Large yellow-barked Ponderosa Pine tower above many of the campsites which along with fir, aspen and lodgepole pine provide shade for many of the campsites. Painted Rocks Lake is located less than 5 miles away by paved road. Wildlife in the area include, bald eagle, mule and whitetail deer, moose, and elk along with numerous songbirds. Bighorn sheep can often be seen in the area. Sites can accommodate tents and/or RVs. Water is available at several locations within the campground. Attractions in the area include Horse Creek Hot Springs (about 18 miles on gravel road), historic ranger station (about 4 miles on paved road), and several scenic mountain peaks accessible by foot trail. Nearby Darby, MT (about 34 miles by paved road) is nearest full service city for all services (laundry, grocery store, etc). Fuel, Post Office and miscellaneous supplies can be found at Conner, MT about 22 miles away by paved road). For information on road or fire restrictions call: 406-821- 3269.
