GenieSummary
Bannack State Park is a great family stop on a road trip. It is a ghost town that has been designated as a MT State Park, with over 50 restored buildings from the gold rush days of the 1860s. There are two campgrounds, Vigilante and Road Agent, with vault toilets and trash bins. Camping fee includes admission to the old Bannack ghost town. Kids can work on a Jr. Ranger program and there are reenactments happening at the park. The creek runs through the campground and all was well maintained. It is a great place to explore the history of the early settlers and miners.
From The Campground
Bannack State Park is a National Historic Landmark and the site of Montana's first major gold discovery on July 28, 1862. This strike set off a massive gold rush that swelled Bannack's population to over 3,000 by 1863. As the value of gold steadily dwindled, Bannack's bustling population was slowly lost. Over 50 buildings line Main Street; their historic log and frame structures recall Montana's formative years.
