Blackwell Flats is a first-come, first-serve campground managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Located in Libby, MT, the campground has seven widely spaced sites on the west side of the Kootenai River, approximately 3.5 miles downstream from Libby Dam. Access is from Forest Road 228, and the site features a boat ramp and day-use parking. Though there is little to no shade and some occasional road noise, the campground is free and offers a nice level site with fire pit, grill, and picnic table. In addition to a boat launch and dock, the site boasts large boat trailer parking areas and a basketball hoop. A hand pump for potable water and vault toilet are centrally located for campers. Bear-proof trash cans are available at each site. While campers may not be right next to the river, proximity to Dunn Creek provides a lovely alternative. Helicopters can sometimes be heard and seen during fire season, as they scoop water from the river for fire mitigation.

From The Campground
Libby Dam Campgrounds offer four primitive camping areas with a 14-day maximum stay. The campgrounds are located on the east and west sides of the Kootenai River, below and above the dam. The Souse Gulch day use area near the visitor center offers playgrounds, picnic shelters, and boat ramp access to Lake Koocanusa. Camping, fishing, boating, and wildlife watching are popular in the recreation areas below the dam.
