The campground is surrounded by seven sandpit lakes, with handicap accessible piers available at Lakes 5, 6, and 7. Lake 7 also has a swimming beach. The campground has mature cottonwood trees, providing lots of shade, and each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Unfortunately, the sites are in poor condition due to erosion, and the vault toilets are often overfull. There is also a daily vehicle park permit required, making the cost quite high for what is offered. However, the campground does offer free bikes for guests to use around the campground and on the nearby hike/bike trail.

Fort Kearny State Recreation Area is located 3 miles from Fort Kearny State Historical Park, which was built to protect Overland Trail travelers. The campground allows only one camping unit per campsite, but an extra tent may be used for dependent children only. Quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Pets are allowed, but they must be kept on a leash that is no longer than 6 feet. Campers staying over must re-register by 2 p.m. Check-in time is 4 p.m. and check-out time is 2 p.m. All persons entering the campground must be registered.
