Round Valley Resevoir is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a semi-mountainous, forested setting with a large man-made reservoir, crystal-clear water, and abundant wildlife. There are several ways to get to the campsites, including boating, backpacking, and biking. The campsites are spaced out to give enough privacy, and you can find sites with water access, full shade, partial shade, or no shade, depending on your preference. The trails are rocky for the first few miles, but then turn into smooth asphalt for easier access. There are campfires at each site, and bear-proof trash cans at the outhouses. Unfortunately, the outhouses can be quite smelly and dirty, and there were only two water pumps working when we visited. There is plenty to do at Round Valley, including fishing, kayaking, swimming, hiking, bird watching, and mountain biking. Be aware that the winds can pick up suddenly on the reservoir and that there may be noisy neighbors. Be sure to bring a water filter and be prepared for carpenter ants and mud.
