Oliver Lee Memorial State Park in Alamogordo, NM is a beautiful campground that offers stunning views. Despite the area outside the park being rundown, the campsites are well-maintained, level, and spacious with a picnic table and fire ring available at each site. The camp host greets visitors and ensures a hassle-free check-in process. The bathhouse, easily accessible from most of the campsites, is clean and functional. Some campsites have a covered shelter and incredible scenery. Guided tours are offered four times a week where visitors can drive to the ranch. Additionally, staff provides a Saturday morning “coffee and conversation” to answer any questions about the history, plants, and wildlife. Overall, the park is exceptional and worth visiting again.
From The Campground
Set against the dramatic Sacramento Mountains, this park features a historic ranch house, quiet camping in the Chihuahuan Desert, and pools of water under the cottonwood trees of Dog Canyon. The campground, just southwest of the mouth of Dog Canyon, is dry and rocky with desert grasses, mesquite, ocotillo, creosote, yucca, and various species of cacti. The sites vary widely in elevation offering privacy and incredible views across the Tularosa Basin. Reservation and first come first served sites are available. Group camping is available. The park makes an excellent base for day trips to nearby attractions and the Lincoln National Forest offers miles of trails ranging from very easy to very challenging.
