Valley of Fires Rec Area (BLM) is a stunning recreational campsite and campground located in Carrizozo, NM. One of the highlights of this area is the beautiful, unique lava field, making for an unforgettable and spectacular walking experience. The bathrooms are centralized and well-maintained, with easy access. If you are tent camping, it is recommended that you reserve Site #25 for a more secluded and private experience, complete with a fantastic campfire cave/wind shelter. Verizon signal strength is exceptional, although there have been mentions of unpredictable wind patterns in the area. Valley of Fire Rec Area is an excellent destination for any length of stay - it caters to one-night stays and longer stays and is an ideal spot for exploring the state, as it is located just off US Rt 380 west of Carrizozo, NM and is within a few hours from White Sands, Albuquerque, and Taos. The campsites are equipped with a trash can, fire pit, shelter, and picnic table, and there are handicap accessible sites available as well. Lava rock geology is very interesting and worth studying. The sites vary in terrain unevenness, but most RVs can easily be accommodated in most of them. Visitors can embark on the paved hike across the Lava fields to enjoy magnificent sunrise and sunset views, although winds could potentially cause some discomfort.
