Valley of Fires Recreation Area in Carrizozo, NM is a peaceful and beautiful campground. Some sites are unlevel, but most of the spots are generally private and have full hookups. Evenings can be windy, but this is typical for May in New Mexico. The camp hosts are available but leave guests to themselves. The bathhouses and campsites are super clean, and there is plenty of space between sites. This campground makes a great base camp for hiking in nearby areas. The view of the lava fields is incredible and worth checking out. The interpretive trail offers a lot of information about the area.
